1. Au Contraire! For Contrabassoon

Au Contraire! For Contrabassoon

Au Contraire! for Contrabassoon (Written for Kristen Lichtenthal) As a composer who plays the euphonium I often find that my peers and I are victims of the misconception that bass instruments are not capable of agility, grace, or, in some cases, musicality. Au contraire! While the standard is to teach bass instruments to support the “more able” ones we are more than capable. I was finally given the exigency to write a work disproving these thoughts when contrabassoon enthusiast Kristen Lichtenthal said I should write a work for her instrument. This work has two basic ideas: the first is to display the virtuosity capable of a contrabassoon, the second is to offer a light-hearted touch to an instrument typically brought in for more serious-natured works.

4. Hiding In Darkness

Hiding In Darkness

Hiding in Darkness explores an often neglected instrument, following a primary motif through a variety of twists and turns in a semi-free meandering line that encompasses the entire range of the contrabassoon, pitting deep, organ-like bass notes against a pinched and thin upper register. Performed here by @Stanley-Kaye-Smith Copyright (c) 2015 Luciano Williamson. All rights reserved. lucianowilliamson@hotmail.com

Contrabasson talk with Amy Martha & Paul

After her contrabassoon was stolen from Kleinhans Music Hall, BPO musician Martha Malkiewicz had to turn to friends for loaners of this very rare type of instrument. Paul Furlong came to the rescue. Paul is playing the "contra" on Friday May 6th at 7 p.m. with the Buffalo Niagara Concert Band, Amy J. Steiner, director. Martha, Paul, and Amy spoke with WNED.

6. Alarm

Alarm

The dorm next to mine recently had the fire alarm go off in the middle of the night. Repeatedly. It was suggested to me that I should make a piece based off of this, and here it is! Short but fun! The time signature alternates between 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8, and there is an ostinato imitating the alarm constantly being played by at least one instrument. Scored for wind sextet: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon and horn.

Approach Of Time

I wrote a quick-paced 8-bar minor key melody, inspired by my daughter (who was busy packing all her worldly possessions for her move). I eventually expanded it to this orchestral piece that also includes an intro and ending based on fugue-like theme. Instrument Parts: Piccolo, 2 Flutes, Oboe, English Horn, 3 Clarinets, Bassoon, Contrabassoon 4 French Horns in F, 3 B-flat Trumpets, 2 Tenor Trombones Bells, Harp, Piano Violins I, Violins II, Violas, Cellos, Double Basses

8. Miniature III

Miniature III

Composed for Contrabassoon, Dance & Electronics, this pieces pictures the instrument as primal creature. Amplification and distortion emphasize its brutal nature. It gives an impression of ancient folkloristic dance, as well as the cult of contemporary electronic dance music. Commissioned by the Royal Northern College of Music in cooperation with the Northern Ballet School Manchester. Performed by Rebecca Oughton. Choreographies by Mariana Ribeiro and Kirsty Ogston. Picture by Steve Snodgrass.

9. Song of the Subterranean for bass and harp

Song of the Subterranean for bass and harp

Song of the Subterranean for violoncello and two harps I once a heard a contrabassoon duet I had written being described as having a “subterranean quality about it,” and the word somehow caught my attention. It made me realize how little thought I give to what lies beneath me as I carry on through my business: miles and miles of various rocks, caves, streams, soils, magma, and life too. This piece represents that unsung, overlooked voice of the Earth, rising from the depths and yearning to be heard. There is one chord progression consisting of four chords that begin the piece and are repeated with perseverance, representing the determination of this passionate yet simple song to be heard. The melodic material starts in the lowest register of the bass, and as its voice rises from the depths, the tessitura ascends until the piece finishes with the instrument playing its highest harmonics.

From the Door of Good and Sad Dreams, SLEEPING OUT OF DOORS mm. 144 - 210

Sleeping Out of Doors is a semi-concerto for piano and orchestra. Commissioned and premiered by Kristjan Järvi and Absolute Ensemble with soloist FangYu Liao, Merkin Hall, New York, May 5 1998. II. The Door of Good and Sad Dreams—Adagio is the slow emotional second movement. It reminds of the music from TV's Twin Peaks for some reason. Note the contrabassoon and vocal-as-instrument in the background. Sleeping Out of Doors in its entirety comprises the following attaca movements played continuously over approximately 15 minutes: THE DOOR OF DAY—Allegro THE DOOR OF GOOD AND SAD DREAMS—Adagio THE DOOR OF CONFUSION AND OBSESSION—Allegro & Adagio FIND YOUR WAY HOME—Cadenza THE DOOR OF DAY—Allegro This commission was made possible in part through a grant from American Music Center and the Margaret Jory Copying Assistance Program. Recording live at Merkin Hall, May 5, 1998.
